The people who bring us our food: why truckers and farmers in southern Italy have stopped
Since midnight, Sicilian lorries have been parked in their yards, and the same is happening in Calabria. This is not a whim and it is not aimed at anyone: these are people who ran the numbers again and found they no longer add up. Here we explain who they are, how much diesel weighs on their accounts, what they are asking for, and what a household can do to stand with them without being caught unprepared.
01 — Chi sono, prima di cosa fanno01 — Who they are, before what they do
On 1 October, at the Pizzo junction on the A2 motorway in Calabria, a man sat down on the tarmac among farmers and lorry drivers and wept in front of local TV cameras. His colleagues called him Antonio. He kept repeating: “Help us, we can't go on.” The video went round the country, and it is worth starting there, because it says something the numbers say less well: behind the word “haulage” there are, above all, people.
In southern Italy, road haulage is largely made of small firms: someone with one or two lorries, a family business with five, a cooperative. Next to them are the farmers, who burn diesel in tractors, irrigation pumps and greenhouses, and who for weeks have been taking to the roads alongside the drivers. They share two things. They work on thin margins. And they cannot pass the increase on to anyone else, because whoever buys their work, from supermarket chains to the companies that hire them, sets the price.
The person who writes this site grows food, and knows what it means to do the diesel sums before deciding whether a job in the field gets done now or later.
02 — I conti che non tornano02 — Numbers that don't add up
In Sicilia è peggio.
Start with one heavy lorry. According to the craft associations CNA, Confartigianato and Casartigiani, it covers on average 120,000 km a year at about 3.3 km per litre: that is 36,000 litres of diesel a year. Every extra 10 cents at the pump means €3,600 more by the end of the year, for a single vehicle. Since July, self-service diesel has risen by 31.5 cents: over €11,000 a year per lorry, if prices stay where they are. Fuel accounts for 30 to 35% of operating costs; add labour and you pass two thirds of the total. What is left for everything else, vehicles, insurance, tolls, maintenance and margin, is not much.
Sicily has it worse. At the end of September the Sicilian hauliers' committee was reporting diesel at around €2.40 a litre. And the island carries two costs the rest of Italy does not see: ferries, which have become dearer partly because of the EU emissions charge now paid by shipowners, and late payment of Sea Modal Shift grants, the incentive for shipping semi-trailers by sea instead of driving them. According to Confindustria Catania, the funds cover about a fifth of what is needed, and the grant has fallen from 30 to just over 6 cents per vehicle-kilometre.
Then there is tax. The fuel-duty discount on diesel, about 6 cents a litre in its final phase, ended on 5 October. The government had announced a “mobile duty” mechanism, which uses the extra VAT collected when prices rise to cut fuel tax, but the decree was never published. Since 6 October diesel duty has been back at its full rate, and the price cap Eni applies on its own network has gone up from €2.19 to €2.25.

For farmers the bill has a second column. Farm diesel carries a reduced duty, but the increase adds to fertiliser, energy and transport, while the price paid at the farm gate stays put. On 12 October in Castrovillari, near Cosenza, farmers who arrived with some fifty tractors were asking for that too: fairer prices for what they sell to the supermarket chains.

La sezione trasporti di Confindustria Catania sospende le attività fino al 22.From midnight, Sicilian lorries stay in their yards and semi-trailers are not collected from the ships, until the 20th. In Calabria the Fedralog association has called a regional stoppage for the same days. The transport section of Confindustria Catania is suspending operations until the 22nd.
04 — Cosa chiedono04 — What they are asking for
- Real action on the price of diesel, starting with the mobile fuel duty that was promised and never activated.
- Payment of the 2024 and 2025 Sea Modal Shift grants, which according to the committee were due by the summer.
- Help with ferry costs, which for an island are not an option but the only road there is.
- For farmers, measures on production costs and fairer prices from the supermarket chains.
Two details say a lot. The Sicilian committee, led by Salvatore Bella, says it no longer feels represented by the big national trade associations. And it chose the form of protest that blocks nobody on the road: lorries parked in yards, no pickets, no marches. Bella also apologised in advance to Sicilians for the disruption. That is not a small thing, and it deserves recognition.
05 — Perché la Sicilia è diversa05 — Why Sicily is different
An island lives on what comes by sea. Much of the goods entering Sicily arrive on semi-trailers loaded on ferries, and from there lorries take them to warehouses and shops. If the semi-trailers stay on the ships, the chain shortens by days, not weeks. The committee puts it bluntly: with the stoppage, Sicily will have 48 hours of autonomy. It should be read for what it is, a way of showing how much they matter, not a countdown. In practice fresh produce suffers first, then items with little warehouse stock. Pasta, tins and dry goods last much longer.
The precedent everyone in Sicily remembers is January 2012. The Forconi movement, bringing together hauliers, farmers and fishermen, began blocking the island on 15 January. After five days almost all of Sicily had run out of fuel. In Palermo the last supplied filling station was overrun, in Agrigento municipal police were patrolling on foot because they had no petrol left, fruit and vegetables cost almost three times as much, and diesel was being sold on the black market.
The difference with today is precisely the form. In 2012 there were roadblocks and pickets outside fuel depots. This week's stoppage, as it was called, is a halt of vehicles, not a blockade of roads. In recent days targeted blockades were reported at the access points of the Augusta-Melilli refinery: it is worth following official news, without getting anxious.
March 2022 is also a useful precedent. After Russia invaded Ukraine, diesel went above €2, drivers stopped across half of southern Italy and the government cut fuel duty by 25 cents a litre, just over 30 including VAT. When the protest of small operators becomes visible, things move.
A five-day stoppage is a level-1 disruption for anyone whose pantry is in order: some emptier fresh shelves, a bit of patience. It only becomes level 2 if it drags on, spreads to other regions or combines with panic. And panic depends on us.
06 — Cosa può fare una famiglia, in amicizia06 — What a household can do, as a friend
- Informati dai canali ufficiali.
Here is the thesis of this piece, and in some ways of the whole site: preparedness is also a form of solidarity. If you have two weeks of pantry at home, a five-day stoppage does not frighten you. You do not rush to empty the shelves and you do not turn on the people protesting. And it is exactly the rush on the shelves, together with anger at the drivers, that turns a stoppage into a crisis.
- Do not stock up now. Stocking up is done beforehand, calmly, rotating what you use. Emptying the supermarket during a stoppage takes the groceries away from people who cannot afford to buy double and turns people against those who have stopped.
- Buy from the producers. Farmers' markets, farm shops, direct sales. Pay the price they ask without haggling. It is the most concrete support there is, and it shortens exactly the supply chain the stoppage has put under strain.
- If you come across a picket, be patient and respectful. Do not force your way through, do not lean on the horn, do not film to mock. If you have a real emergency, get out and explain calmly.
- Get your information from official channels. In Italy, Viaggiare Informati (CCISS, phone 1518) and Anas for traffic, the Transport Ministry site for announced strikes. Not from WhatsApp chains.
- Explain their reasons to people who ignore them. Almost nobody knows how many litres a lorry burns in a year. Now you do.
- Keep your fuel tank above half, as always: it is the rule that keeps you out of the queue on the wrong day.
- Check you have at least ten days of your usual medicines.
- Keep a little cash in case some electronic payments hiccup.
- Buy fruit and vegetables from the farmer or at the market: you both win.
- If some fresh shelves thin out towards the end of the week, that is normal. Nothing else is needed.
07 — Le altre voci07 — The other voices
Standing with someone does not mean hiding the costs. A reader who feels misled stops trusting, so here is what the others say.
- The government. The fixed fuel-duty discounts have cost about €2.5 billion since March, and the next budget has less room than expected. There has been no official explanation for why the mobile duty did not start.
- The Sicilian regional government has set aside €15 million to refund up to 70% of the extra diesel cost compared with the February average, up to €50,000 per firm. According to the committee it helps mainly firms with one to five lorries.
- Eleven national trade associations, including Anita, Fai, Cna-Fita, Confartigianato Trasporti, Unatras and Assotir, wrote to the Interior Minister on 13 October. They acknowledge the crisis, but ask that those who choose to work around Brindisi and Foggia be able to do so safely, and report episodes of intimidation that still need to be verified.
- Legacoop's Sicilian food and fisheries branch shares the concern over costs but distances itself from roadblocks.
- The law. Since Italy's 2025 security decree, blocking a road with your body is once again a criminal offence, with a heavier penalty when several people do it. Lorries parked in their yards are a different matter.
- Other small businesses. A long blockade also weighs on those with perishable goods to deliver or waiting for a part to keep working.
Look at all of it, and the numbers are still the ones in section 02. And they still side with the people who have stopped.

Ci vogliono trenta secondi.
An article about a “lorry drivers' revolt”, with a driver stabbed near Foggia and a pasta maker halting production in solidarity, is still online and ranks well in searches. It is from 24 February 2022. Passing it on today as fresh news does two kinds of damage: it frightens readers and paints as violent a protest that, in Sicily, chose not to take to the roads.
Before sharing anything about the stoppage, check three things: the date, the source, the place. It takes thirty seconds.
Two weeks of pantry are not selfishness. They are what lets you say to the people who stop: go ahead, I understand.
