“If you could save just one book” is a fun dinner-table game and a poor preparedness criterion. A reserve library is a small system: one book that tells you what to do and in what order, one that gives you the numbers for where you live, and the paper European governments already print for you. Plus a few rules so you don't buy the wrong book.
01 — Il vincolo sbagliato01 — The wrong constraint
The one-book question has an obvious appeal: it forces a choice. But choosing well assumes you know which problem you will face, and at level 3, when supply chains jam for months, the problems arrive all at once: what to plant and when, how to preserve, how to repair, how to treat.
The single book has three structural flaws.
- It is foreign. The great self-sufficiency manuals are British or American. Rainfall, sowing calendar and varieties are those of Wales or Oregon, not of the Po valley or the Apennine hills.
- The reader might not be you. Whoever opens that book could be your child in ten years, or a neighbour who has never seen a vegetable plot. It needs drawings, not just text.
- You don't read it, you look things up. A reserve book gets opened in a hurry, with dirty hands, looking for one specific thing. The index, the illustrations and the paper are what count.
The minimum pair is this: a foreign book that gives you the structure, a local one that gives you the numbers. Then there is a third shelf, free of charge, that almost nobody uses.
Seymour ti dice cosa cercare.
I limiti vanno detti.
If the criterion is “what do I do today, and in what order”, the candidate is still John Seymour, The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency, first published in 1976. It is not the best on any single subject: on bees, earth building or fermentation there are far deeper manuals. But it is built around seasons and plot size, with the way vegetables, animals, preserving and energy fit together. A single-subject manual assumes you already know what to look for. Seymour tells you what to look for.
Its limits should be stated. It is a book from 1970s Wales: climate, species and hygiene habits are those of its time and place. On home preserving, where a mistake puts you in hospital, fifty-year-old advice must be checked against current sources.
If you read English comfortably, the updated alternative is Carla Emery, The Encyclopedia of Country Living, 50th Anniversary Edition: a book its author revised and expanded for decades, more American and less illustrated than Seymour, but huge.
In Italy, buying Seymour comes with a problem: three different books share almost the same title, the same subtitle and the same series. If you read Italian or are buying for an Italian household, this is the trap.

Data from the Libraccio and LibroCo listings, checked in October 2026.
All three carry the subtitle “Istruzioni pratiche per vivere meglio risparmiando” (practical instructions for living better while saving money) and sit in the same series, Il filo verde di Arianna. When we checked, the 128-page edition and the 376-page one had the same cover price, €39. The word “nuovo” (new) in the title is the catch: it suggests an update, and it is a third of the book.
The best choice is the 2016 Arianna edition, hardback and illustrated, to be found second-hand. Failing that, the 2025 edition with 376 pages is much closer to the complete book: it is a paperback, but a bookbinder will rebind it for little money.
A reserve book is bought by ISBN/EAN and page count, never by title. Before paying, look at the contents: the complete manual has a section organised by plot size, from the kitchen garden to the small farm. If the listing says 128 pages, that is not it.
04 — Il libro che dà i numeri: i Manuali Hoepli04 — The book with the local numbers: the Hoepli manuals
The second shelf costs nothing. Between the late 1800s and the early 1900s the Milan publisher Ulrico Hoepli printed hundreds of pocket manuals on trades and techniques: farming, beekeeping, cheesemaking, mechanics, building. They were written for people without widespread electricity, modern logistics or home repair services. That is exactly the level-3 reader. Outside Italy, look for the equivalent in your own language: almost every European country had its practical manual series in the same period.
Many have been digitised by university libraries and can be read in full on archive.org. Three Italian examples we checked:
To find more, search archive.org for “Hoepli” together with the trade you need. For a local farming calendar it is also worth looking for publications of the cattedre ambulanti di agricoltura, the travelling agricultural advisory offices that toured the Italian countryside from the late 1800s to the 1930s teaching up-to-date techniques, province by province. Many countries had similar extension services: their bulletins are the closest thing to a manual tuned to your climate.
We don't do piracy here. On archive.org the “not in copyright” label often refers to US law. In Italy and the European Union a work enters the public domain seventy years after the author's death. For an 1897 manual doubts are rare; for one from the 1930s they are not. Before printing and sharing it, check when the author died.
Dai vecchi manuali prendi i gesti, i calendari, i disegni. Dosi, trattamenti e conservazione degli alimenti verificali su fonti attuali.
Techniques age well, chemistry does not. A late-19th-century manual may calmly recommend substances that are now banned or known to be toxic. Take the methods, the calendars and the drawings from old manuals. Check doses, treatments and food preservation against current sources.
05 — Lo scaffale gratuito05 — The free shelf
The third shelf is the one almost nobody uses. Several European countries publish free household preparedness guides, written by agencies that have to answer for what they write and designed for families who live in flats.
The best-known case is Swedish. The brochure Om krisen eller kriget kommer (“If crisis or war comes”) was first delivered to every Swedish household in 1943 and kept coming until 1991. It returned in 2018, and in late November 2024 a new edition reached about five million households. It exists in English and can be downloaded from the Swedish civil defence agency's website.
Finland has an official guide in English on its public portal suomi.fi; Denmark has an emergency agency portal asking every household to cope alone for three days, with about nine litres of drinking water per person. In Italy the most useful material comes from the civil protection campaign Io non rischio, organised by risk: flood, earthquake, tsunami, volcanoes, forest fires.
Print them. A PDF saved on your phone is worth exactly as much as your phone's battery.
06 — Come si conserva06 — How to store it
- Mai in cantina.
A reserve library lives or dies for mundane reasons.
- Never in the basement. Anyone who saw Romagna in May 2023 knows it: the basement is the first place to flood. High shelf, dry room.
- A plastic box with an airtight lid and a few silica gel sachets. For printed sheets, clear sleeves.
- Double-sided printing and spiral binding at a copy shop: it lies flat and survives dirty hands.
- A handwritten index on the first page: what is in the box and what it is for. The person opening it may not be you.
- Coloured bookmarks on the sections you would use first.
- Review the brochures every two or three years: agencies update them.
- One organising manual: Seymour (the complete edition, never the 128-page one), or Emery.
- One or two local or trade manuals: Hoepli or your country's equivalent, agricultural extension bulletins.
- One printed government guide: your national one plus a Nordic one.
- One recent first-aid manual.
- One “why” book: Lewis Dartnell, The Knowledge. It does not teach you the methods, it teaches you how to rebuild them.
The single book is a dinner-party question. The box is an answer.
