Neanche a farlo apposta: i frigoriferi dei supermercati a 50 gradi Right on cue: supermarket fridges at 50 degrees
Tre settimane prima era toccato a circa 700 supermercati in Francia. We had just finished writing that connected objects are fragile. On the night of 1 to 2 November, in nine European countries, someone remotely switched off the cooling in the display fridges of dozens of shops. Three weeks earlier it had happened to about 700 supermarkets in France. This isn't about the fridge in your kitchen, and the spoiled food doesn't go back on the shelves. But the lesson is the same as the digital leash: a cold chain hanging from a web page left open on the internet.
01 — Due notti, nove paesi01 — Two nights, nine countries
I fatti, in ordine.
- Lussemburgo: alcuni Delhaize.
- Svezia: alcuni ICA e 6 o 7 Coop.
- Italia: almeno 4 Coop in franchising in Sicilia.
The facts, in order. Figures vary from source to source: these are the most cautious ones.
- August 2026, United States. In at least six military base commissaries, including Fort Huachuca in Arizona, freezers switch themselves into defrost mode. The Pentagon is investigating a possible cyberattack, but so far it has not been established.
- Night of 11 to 12 October, France. The economy minister speaks of about 700 supermarkets hit out of 10,000: Intermarché and Netto, Coopérative U, Carrefour, Monoprix, a few E.Leclerc. Display cases are forced into defrost and reach up to 50 degrees; in some shops the equipment starts to catch fire. Loss estimates range from a few million to tens of millions of euros.
- Night of 1 to 2 November, the rest of Europe.
- Belgium: several dozen Delhaize shops, 15 Carrefour, 10 to 15 Intermarché, 5 Spar and one IKEA. A butcher in Hove saw its fridges climb to 18 degrees and lost €15,000 of meat.
- Luxembourg: a few Delhaize shops.
- Sweden: some ICA shops and 6 or 7 Coop. In one shop in Sjöbo, fridges and freezers were set to 50 degrees.
- Ireland: 13 SuperValu stores out of 223, all with the same refrigeration model.
- Netherlands: at least 17 businesses, including butchers and small shops.
- Finland: a few small Kesko outlets.
- Estonia: at least one Selver supermarket.
- Portugal: 7 Intermarché stores.
- Italy: at least 4 franchised Coop stores in Sicily.
Nobody has claimed responsibility. In France the Paris prosecutor is investigating, in Belgium the federal prosecutor.
02 — Come hanno fatto02 — How they did it
Not with a movie-grade weapon. Every supermarket has a small computer that runs its display fridges: it monitors temperatures, logs alarms and decides when to defrost. It is often managed remotely by the maintenance company, through a web page. The attackers got in there and ordered continuous defrosting, with the goods inside and at night, when nobody was in the shop.
The systems involved are mainly controllers made by the Danish company Danfoss, plus some Copeland and Dixell units. According to the manufacturers and the security agencies there are three problems, and none of them is new.
- Reachable from the internet. The management pages were open, with no protected network in between.
- Factory passwords. In the Netherlands, Danfoss says, the systems hit were not on a secure network and still had their original password.
- Unsupported devices. In France most of them were old models that Danfoss stopped updating years ago. For these, a reset isn't enough: they are vulnerable again as soon as they reconnect.
In 2025 researchers at Claroty had found three flaws in a Danfoss controller, fixed in August of that year, and had counted 2,765 devices of that type exposed online. No authority has linked those flaws to the attacks. A British security expert, Ken Munro, summed it up: “This is about basic cyber hygiene.”
Defrosting is a normal operation. In many shops no alarm went off, because as far as the system was concerned it was just doing its job. The best sabotage is the kind that looks like maintenance.

Nobody is necessarily wrong. But a number with no source and no date isn't information, it's an impression.
None of this was unpredictable.
- Since 2014 the French cybersecurity agency has been advising against exposing industrial systems online.
- In 2022 the same type of controller had already been attacked in Russian and Israeli shops with no firewall or protected network. Danfoss itself described it in its October 2025 newsletter.
- In 2025 the flaws were public and the fix was available.
- In mid-October 2026 the French alert warned that attack campaigns were probably still under way.
- Three weeks later the second wave arrived.
This is exactly the gray rhino: a known, probable and ignored risk. Why it was ignored is mundane. Supermarket refrigeration is often run by an outside contractor, and the shop doesn't even know that web page exists. Sometimes the fix isn't an update but a piece of equipment to replace. And as long as it works, nobody touches it.
In the second piece of the series, The house that listens, we wrote that smart objects are fragile because they depend on a distant server. This is the other side of the same coin: the object can be reached by anyone.
05 — Cosa vuol dire per una famiglia05 — What it means for a household
Livello 1, e nemmeno pieno.
Level 1, and not even a full one. Five things, none of them costs more than a coffee.
- Your shopping is safe. The problem isn't the food you buy, it's the food that's missing: in an affected shop the fresh and frozen aisles may be empty for a day or two. It's exactly the case for keeping a pantry of at least two weeks.
- At the freezer aisle, check three things. The product should be loose in the bag, not one solid block. There should be no large ice crystals or heavy frost inside. The packaging shouldn't be deformed or wet. These are the signs of a product that thawed and was refrozen, and they apply always, not just this week.
- Your freezer in a blackout. With the door shut, according to the UK Food Standards Agency, a full freezer keeps food frozen for up to 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24. The fridge stays cold for about 4 hours. The trick that costs nothing: a cup of frozen water with a coin on top. If the coin is still on top when you come back, all is well. If it's halfway down, something thawed and refroze. If it's at the bottom, the freezer thawed completely. It doesn't replace a thermometer, but it tells you what happened while you were away.
- Keep the home fridge dumb. The question from The house that listens counts double: what does it do if the internet goes down? For a fridge the only acceptable answer is “it works just the same”.
- Check your home network. At home, the supermarkets' mistake is made with cameras and video recorders. On your router, turn off automatic port opening, called UPnP in the settings. Change the factory passwords and install updates.
If you have display fridges or cold rooms controlled remotely, call your maintenance company and ask six questions. They match the guidance from the French alert, the national agencies and the manufacturers.
