L'ottica che serve davvero: binocolo, termocamera e occhiali di riserva The optics you actually need: binoculars, thermal camera and spare glasses

On a site that distrusts catalogue gear, an article on optics needs justifying. The justification is simple: seeing far and seeing clearly are information, and information decides what you do. How high the river has risen, which way the smoke is going, whether the road past the bridge is clear. And the most important optic of all is probably already on your nose.

01 — Vedere da lontano per restare lontano01 — Seeing from afar so you can stay afar

The value of binoculars in an emergency is not seeing more. It is being able to look without getting closer. During a flood alert, the level of a riverbank is checked from a safe distance, never from the top of the embankment. A landslide, a fire, an accident, a flooded road, a march changing route: all things better assessed from afar before deciding whether to go through.

The three optics in this article cover different levels. Binoculars serve mainly at level 1, in local disruptions. A thermal camera is useful at both level 1 and level 2, when winter is long and gas is expensive. Spare glasses serve at every level, and they are the ones almost nobody has.

“8x42” means 8 times magnification and 42 mm objective lenses. Divide the second number by the first and you get the exit pupil, the diameter of the beam of light reaching your eye: 42 divided by 8 is 5.25 mm.

Why does it matter? Because your pupil has a size too. In daylight it is 2 or 3 mm. In the dark it widens: in children it exceeds 8 mm, in older age it rarely goes beyond 4. An exit pupil larger than your eye's pupil is light that does not get in, and weight you carry for nothing. A sixty-year-old does not need a 7x50.

The second limit is your hand. Beyond 10x magnification, without support, the image shakes: every small movement is magnified as much as the subject. That is why 15x or 20x binoculars, or zoom models, are almost useless in an emergency.

Pesi indicativi: variano molto tra modelli a tetto e Porro. Weights are indicative: they vary a lot between roof-prism and Porro models.

Tetto o PorroRoof or Porro

Porro binoculars have the classic shape, with the objective lenses set wider apart than the eyepieces. For the same price they often give a better image and more depth, but they are bulkier and less often waterproof. Roof-prism binoculars have straight barrels: compact and easy to seal, but they need phase coating on the prisms to perform well. Below €100 a good Porro often beats a cheap roof; above €150 a roof becomes the more practical choice.

Cinque prove in negozioFive tests in the shop

Scarta.
  2. La rotella della messa a fuoco deve girare fluida, senza giochi né punti duri.
Riflessi e aloni segnalano trattamenti scadenti.
  1. A distant straight line, a roofline or a pole. If you see double, or your eyes tire after a minute, the two barrels are misaligned. Reject it.
  2. The focus wheel must turn smoothly, with no play or stiff spots.
  3. The edges: look at a grid, such as tiles or windows. At the margins the image should not bend or blur too much.
  4. With your glasses on: fold down the eyecups and check you see the whole circle, not a black ring at the sides.
  5. Against the light: point towards a bright area, never at the sun. Flare and haloes point to poor coatings.

An 8x42 roof prism, waterproof, in the €150–350 band, one per household. Budget permitting, an 8x25 compact that lives in the car or the backpack. Never point binoculars at the sun: a moment is enough to damage the eye permanently.

A thermal camera does not see light but the heat every object gives off. It works in total darkness, and partly through light smoke. There are two things it cannot do, and it is worth knowing them before spending: it cannot see through glass, which to it is a mirror, and it cannot see inside walls, only the temperature of their surface.

For a household there are four real uses.

Two specs to look at: sensor resolution, at least 160x120 and preferably 256x192, and thermal sensitivity (NETD), below 50 mK.

Digital night-vision viewers costing a few tens of euros are a different thing: they see thanks to an infrared illuminator, have a short range and are of little use to a household. We do not cover weapon optics, night or day. It is not our field, and the site's manifesto says so clearly.

04 — Gli occhiali di riserva: l'ottica che quasi nessuno ha04 — Spare glasses: the optic almost nobody has

Dopo i 45 anni quasi tutti diventano presbiti, e moltissime persone portano occhiali o lenti a contatto.

After 45 almost everyone becomes long-sighted, and a great many people wear glasses or contact lenses. Losing or breaking them during an evacuation means not being able to read a medicine leaflet, a message on your phone, a map, a sign. It is one of the simplest things to prevent and one of the most neglected.
